Schools are expected to:
- Adopt the Councils Health and Safety policy
- Establish responsibilities to ensure compliance with the policy
- Take responsibility for health and safety at School
The Head Teacher is ultimately responsible for:
- Adopting the policy and ensuring compliance
- Providing sufficient resources to manage health and safety effectively
- Communicating health and safety information in school
- Ensuring staff are competent to deal with health and safety issues
- Ensuring compliance with RMBC policy with respect to contracting or
commissioning work - Ensure ‘risk assessments’ are completed for all activities where there
are significant risks - Reporting to Governors in line with local practice
Reasons for having an effective Health and Safety policy:
- It is a requirement by law to have policies relating to health and safety.
As well as legal reasons there are also moral and financial reasons. - Parents and guardians need to know that School and other facilities have
good health and safety arrangements for their children, and children are
aware of hazards and risks within School and the wider community. - Staff need to be confident that they can rely on well planned health and
safety systems when carrying out their duties. - Financial priorities are related to risk assessments, so resources are not
wasted. - Absences due to injury and ill health are reduced.
- Damages to premises and property are reduced.
- The associated costs of injury to persons / damage to property are reduced.
