The importance to schools of high quality staff training and development, and its clear link to raising standards, is now increasingly recognised. The provision of training and development for staff is an investment of resources, and it is essential that a school establishes effective leadership and management of CPD. Most schools now have a designated CPD leader within the leadership team. Leadership of CPD also extends to the Governing Body, to whom the Headteacher must report annually on CPD.
Responsibility for CPD rests with individual teachers as well as the school leadership. The framework of Professional Standards for Teachers (2007) includes in its Core standards a responsibility for teachers to ‘Evaluate their performance and be committed to improving their practice through appropriate professional development’. Teachers are supported in this responsibility by the new Performance Management regulations for schools, which also set out a clear role for the reviewer (usually the team leader) to promote the professional learning of their team as a vehicle for achieving team and individual objectives.
