Ownership of mobile phones by young people is growing every year; however, the age of children who own these phones is getting younger. Phones have changed dramatically from the original designs and the technology has developed rapidly over the last few years. Most phones can now not only receive and make calls but also send text messages or SMS (Short Message Service), multimedia messages or MMS (Multimedia Message Service) which allow the sender to include media such as video, sound and images. Along with this, phones are now capable of accessing the internet through WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) and this is extending through the inclusion of colour screens, still and video cameras and web browsers. With the developments however, come risks including open access to the internet along with the physical risk of assault.
