Tuesday 6th February saw the screening of the first ever RotherVision Song Contest, a fusion and celebration of Primary Language learning, music and ICT excellence!
Eight Rotherham primary schools - Anston Hillcrest Primary, Aughton Primary, Bramley Grange Primary, Herringthorpe Junior, Kiveton Park Meadows Junior, Maltby Crags Junior, Swinton Fitzwilliam Primary, Thorpe Hesley Junior took part in the Eurovision Song Contest-style event held at Clifton: A Community Arts School.
Each one performed a song in the language they are currently learning at school. The performances were shown live to each school involved along with Rockingham Professional Development Centre using Video Conferencing technology available through RGfL. This enabled fellow pupils back in school to watch the performances and interact by voting across the link for what they judged to be the best songs in true Eurovision style!
The Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham were on hand to present the trophies for the best song and declared it, “Better than the real thing!”
The final results were very close with Anston Hillcrest Primary School singing their way to victory, closely followed by Maltby Crags Junior School and Aughton Primary School.
The schools also produced a film in the target language which had been judged prior to the day and the winning entry from Thorpe Hesley Junior school was shown to the audience at Clifton. The school received a Trophy presented by a delighted Simon Green, Regional Manager of Comenius Yorkshire and the Humber, which provided sponsorship for the event. He was highly impressed by the all the talented children from Rotherham.
In joint second place were Herringthorpe Junior School and Kiveton Park Meadows Junior School and Maltby Crags Junior for third place.
Highly commended certificates were awarded to Bramley Grange Primary School and Swinton Fitzwilliam Primary School.
