Top Tips For Finding Rotherham Images

Browsing Quickly to Rotherham Materials

Links on the home page -
On Rotherham’s personalised home page you’ll find links directly to local material. You can click to immediately see all the Rotherham images, or a selection of Pathfinder Packs of images by local area. Scroll to the bottom of the homepage to see the links.
Search -
Try searching for the name of your local area or another local keyword in the search box in the top right corner of the page to quickly see what’s available.

Rotherham’s Magic Number

Rotherham’s magic number is 0968 -
All the Rotherham images were delivered to Scran in one batch or project called “Rotherham in Pictures”. The project’s unique identifying number is 0968. You can add this number to a search keyword in order to only search within Rotherham images. Separate the keywords and the number with spaces, eg: steel 0968 will find Rotherham records marked with the word ‘steel’.

Geosearching

Using the map interface to find local material -
Choose Search and then Geographical from the Scran menu on the left of the page. The Geographical Search lets you click on a map to search by location. You can use the tools to find your school (for example) then search for records linked to that area. You can search by radius as small as 1km. Click the How? link under the map for instructions on using the tool.

Cross-referencing

About metadata -

Rotherham’s records don’t have lengthy captions, but they do have metadata, information about the record in useful categories like What, Where and When. You can use this information to link from one image to other similar ones.

Making use of the metadata -

When you find an image you like, scroll down to see the metadata: it’s in the section marked Record Details. When a piece of information here is written in blue text, it’s a link to more images with the same data. For example, if, under Where, you see a 1901 – 1905 written in blue, you can click that link and you’ll see other images with that same date.
